The Plansee. For a long time, it has been a great wish of mine to experience the sunrise on the western shore of the Plansee early in the morning. Preferably with a beautiful sea of fog. For the 19th of September 2020, we have planned to start a sunrise mission at the Plansee in Austria with exactly this goal.
[04:00 am] – my mobile phone rings. I spent the night in my car for the first time. In the middle of Oberstdorf on a car park near the lifts. I arranged to meet @mx.lh, @sebastian.lhe, @fabiangreza and @philipp_blanz. The four of them were still at Seealpsee. I drove from Munich to Oberstdorf straight after work.
We chat briefly, then it’s „off to dreamland“. After this short night, I finally have the answer to the question of whether I can easily spend the night in my car: „No“.
So shortly after four o’clock in the night we set off. We still have over an hour’s drive ahead of us, followed by about another hour’s climb to the viewpoint on the western shore of the Plansee. So there is no time to lose.
Already on the way to Austria we drive through many very dense fog valleys. I always find it reassuring to be on the road so early in the morning. Driving alone through the deep night sometimes has something meditative about it.
The Sunrise Mission at Lake Plansee begins:
When we arrive, we start walking straight away. The path first leads along the shore of the Plansee before we turn right and follow a path that winds serpentine up the mountain. It is steeply uphill. We stop regularly to catch our breath. The sunrise is already looming in the distance. Enough motivation to get there as quickly as possible. After a good 50 minutes we have made it.
The view rewards us for the effort of the ascent. A beautiful blanket of fog has formed over the Plansee. The sun is still too weak to fight its way through the dense fog. Perfect conditions to take beautiful moody shots.
This morning could not have gone better. We spend some more time at the viewpoint before we descend comfortably. Once we reach the bottom, we are tempted to take a dip in the cool water. The Plansee is already very cold and so it remains a short, very refreshing dive. All in all, an exhausting, yet perfect start into the day.
